turtle bay townhouse
New York, NY
Madsen Engineering took the lead role in structural design for the high-end renovation project of this 1860s brownstone, part of the historic Turtle Bay Garden neighborhood in Midtown Manhattan, in collaboration with Studio Mapos.
The gut renovation of this landmarked building included reframing of all the existing floors, lowering the existing cellar, a new elevator, a double height open space on the second floor. A new rear extension with a glass roof was built and the rear wall was removed and replaced with a steel moment frame. A new one-story penthouse was built above a portion of the existing roof; new framing was installed to support the new penthouse floor with an occupied roof deck on the remainder of the roof area.
