In 2023, Madsen Consulting Engineering joined forces with DCI Engineers, a nationwide firm specializing in structural, civil, heavy industrial, bridge and right-of-way services. This merger created an excellent opportunity not only for Madsen’s staff but our clients. DCI shares Madsen’s belief that what we do as engineers can create exponential benefits for our clients and project partners, and this merger allows us to preserve those things we value, while growing and learning from each other to improve those things that we both already do well.

DCI+Madsen is serving clients across the entire United States, providing them regional expertise and expanded resources in areas of mass timber, industrial, bridge and other specialty markets.

WHO WE ARE

Madsen Consulting Engineering was founded in 2010 by Erik Madsen and Cristian Vimer. Our local team is comprised of sixteen staff members, including nine engineers. Building on the combined experience of our completed work as professionals, we approach every project as unique and search for innovative solutions focused on reducing construction cost and time.

We are committed to highly innovative design through research and analysis of the core issues surrounding each project. We are committed to position our company as an innovator and a leader on lean and sustainable construction; we are also focused on delivering solutions that will help our clients achieve higher green (LEED) and sustainability standards. We are constantly pursuing knowledge of up-to-date design standards and technological advances in the construction industry, including a constantly increased attention to Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) and Building Information Modeling (BIM). Our resources, software and specialists, allow us to deliver fully integrated 3D solutions - from architectural and structural 3D models (Revit), through structural design (RISA, Etabs, Safe, etc.) and further into construction and fabrication (SDS/2, Rebar Cad, etc.).

We are deeply involved in the construction phase of both projects designed in house or projects already in construction. We produce in house detailed structural and miscellaneous steel shop drawings for steel fabricators and erectors together with detailed connection calculations. We also produce concrete reinforcement shop drawings as well as cold-formed-steel shop drawings and connection design. Our specialists use the full capabilities of the software to account for constructability and erectability of structural elements and can deliver high quality drawings, detailed bills of materials and CNC data compatible with cutting edge equipment, adjusted for fabricator preferences and fully integrated with BIM software. We also provide design and detailing for temporary shoring and demolition and we are a licensed structural special inspection agency with certified inspectors on staff.

We are strategically located in New York’s Financial District with sound experience and understanding of local and national codes and standards. We are familiar with projects requiring approval from NYC Transit Authority (MTA), DOT or other government agencies. We designed several affordable housing projects, funded by government agencies such as HUD or HPD. We have extensive expertise on all types of new or existing buildings, from low to high-rise and single to multi-building developments, across several sectors including residential, commercial/retail, cultural, institutional, educational, healthcare facilities and art installations. Our clients include developers, architects, homeowners, builders, artists, contractors and fabricators.

Our principals, Erik Madsen and Cristian Vimer, have been selected to be part of the NYC Department of Buildings Code Revision Structural Technical Committee for the new NYC Building Code, as well as the first edition of the NYC Existing Building Code, modeled on the 2018 International Existing Building Code (IEBC 2018) and the 2020 New York State Existing Building Code. Erik Madsen is the President-Elect of the Structural Engineers Association of New York (SEAoNY).
