Mily on Union is a seven-story plus partial cellar and roof green-oriented residential building building in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Residences range from studios to three-bedroom apartments, including penthouses, duplexes, residences with private terraces and balconies. The building was designed by Workshop Design + Architecture.
The structural system consists of composite lightweight concrete on long span metal deck floors supported by steel beams and columns. The special decks span more than 20 feet without beam supports. The deck and part of the steel structure is featured and exposed in the apartments for industrial inspired interiors. The acoustically-engineered glazed facade is framed with a steel outrigger structure using cantilevered frames and tension cables, supporting private balconies and a vegetated privacy screen that improves air quality, reduces solar heat gain and provides noise reduction.
Madsen took over the project from a different engineer, who retired while the project was in construction, with parts of the foundation (a hybrid between shallow footings and deep friction piles) completed at the time. A peer review of the previous design and value engineering for structural optimization were performed by Madsen. Alterations to the already installed foundation were designed. The building is in the immediate vicinity of the G line subway tracks running below Union Avenue and it required MTA approval.
Madsen also provided structural steel connection design for this project. Seismic design of lateral member connections was also included.
